Second Chance is a Baltimore-based non-profit that salvages reusable components from buildings scheduled for demolition and sells the recycled items, donations, and materials to the public in their retail warehouse store, keeping items in circulation and out of landfills. CBH+A's renovation improves the aesthetics, function, and environmental considerations of their facilities located in a re-purposed warehouse in South Baltimore.
Green practices inspired mostly every decision in the final design of Second Chance. The parking lot has bioswales that integrate the native landscape into what would otherwise be a sea of cement and a new roof reduces the heat island effect. With a new entry and the addition of garage storage along the north side of the parking lot, aesthetics and circulation will be greatly improved.
